What is a QR Code?
A QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode that can be read by QR readers on smartphones and tablets. Similar to a bar code, the QR code high-contrast symbol contains encoded information, such as links to URLS or videos, which are revealed when read by a compatible device.
How long will the codes be active?
All codes in the BAL4.tv platform will be supported for a period of 30 years.
How do QR code readers work?
QR code apps use your smartphone’s camera to read and decode an embedded URL. When you launch your designated QR code reader app and scan a code, your phone will quickly open a web browser and present the related digital content.
How do we place codes into the book?
You will download your QR code and upload corresponding video in one simple web interface. The QR code will be optimally sized and saved as a JPEG (.jpg) file. Just place the code into a layout the same way you currently place your images.
Can a video be changed after the code has been generated and printed?
Yes. As long as you are a current customer of Balfour Yearbooks, you’ll be able to access and update the videos associated with your purchased codes.
Can we change the color of the code?
You may change the color of your codes; however, you do so at your own risk. Readers are very sensitive and may not recognize all colors when the contrast ratio is below 4:1. Balfour will guarantee the functionality of all black and white codes used at the recommended size.
Why do you print your codes with the short URL beneath the code?
These codes are printed along with the short URL to ensure access to the digital content via any web browser.
Can we remove the short URL beneath the code?
Yes. You may crop out the short URL, but you’ll want to make sure you leave at least 1 pixel of white space beneath the QR code. We do recommend that you leave the short URL, as it allows your entire readership access to the digital content.
What is the smallest size we can make the code?
We generate all of our codes at the smallest recommended size, which is 1″ wide, 1.127″ high at 300dpi.
What is the largest size we can make the code?
These codes can be as large as you need them to be, as long as you maintain the appropriate resolution of 300 dpi or more. Keep in mind the larger the QR code, the farther away your QR reader device will need to be from that code to read it properly. In general, we do not recommend enlarging a code beyond 150% of it’s original size. NOTE: Always test your codes after resizing to make sure they still work.
Can we add anything outside the code?
Yes. As long as you don’t alter the white space around the outside of the actual code, you can include just about anything you’d like.
Can we remove the white border around the code?
No. The white space in and around the code creates the contrast for the QR code to be read by a smartphone scanner. Removing or altering the white space in or around the code could render it useless.
What types of files can we upload?
The following is a list of acceptable file types that you can connect to a QR code on BAL4.TV:
What is the limit on the length of a video?
There is no limit on the time length, but all videos are required to be 500 MB or smaller in file size. Also, while in some cases subject matter may dictate otherwise, we suggest that you limit video length to no more than 6 minutes, favoring quality over quantity for both video image and attention.

If you have trouble finding your school, please try the following tips:
- Search by school name and city. Example, "washington high dallas".
- Search by school zip code. For example, instead of the school name you can search by the school's zip code. Beverly Hills High School could be located by searching "90210".
If you still cannot locate your school, please contact Balfour Customer Support, and we will be glad to help you.
