The Citadel, also known as The Military College of South Carolina, was founded in 1842 in Charleston. It is one of six military colleges in the U.S.

With an enrollment of 3,300 cadets, the Citadel Bulldogs have been a member of the Southern Conference since 1936. In addition to a gameday mascot named Spike, the school affectionately cares for its live bulldogs General and Boo V.

First class cadets (seniors) receive their Citadel Rings at a special presentation ceremony that was previously held in the college's chapel, but now takes place in the school's field house.

Notable alumni include Super bowl XXXI winner Travis Jervey; best-selling author Pat Conroy; Miss USA 1994 Frances Louise "Lu" Parker; and Baltimore Oriels pitcher Asher Wojciechowski.
